Pause before touching the front
Look for cracks, chips, a separated corner, or a frame hanging at an unusual angle. Do not press on the glazing to see whether it is intact. If glass may be broken, keep children and pets away and avoid handling it casually.
For a small sound-looking frame that can be safely removed, support it properly and place it on a clean stable surface. Use assistance for anything heavy, large, or awkward. Do not lift by the hanging wire or attempt to inspect the back while balancing the frame in one hand.
Compare the frame and its contents
Check corner joints, retaining fittings, backing, and visible hardware for movement or damage. From the front, look for a shifted mat, artwork touching the glazing, or particles that were not present before. A changed position inside the frame is a reason for a framer to inspect the mounting.
Do not open a valuable or fragile framed work merely to push the print back into place. A slipped image may indicate an attachment problem, and forcing it into alignment can create a crease or abrasion. Photograph the change and explain the bump to the professional who assesses it.
Inspect the wall attachment too
A bump can affect the wall-side fastener even if the frame itself is sound. Look for looseness, cracking, or an enlarged hole. Do not reuse an attachment that moves in the wall without having the installation corrected for the actual wall construction and load.
Consider why the collision happened. A chair back, door swing, or passing bag may strike the same frame again. Moving the picture slightly or changing the furniture arrangement can be more useful than repairing it and returning it to the identical vulnerable position.
Rehang only a sound assembly
If anything is cracked, loose, or uncertain, keep the frame safely supported and consult a framer. For damage to the paper or image surface, seek a conservator. Avoid household glue, tape, or pressure intended to make the frame appear normal before the underlying problem is understood.
When the frame is ready to return to the wall, confirm the intended attachments are fully engaged and stable. Add a dated note and photographs to its record if there was a visible change or repair. A minor incident can remain minor when the check includes both the object and the installation, rather than only whether the picture still looks level.
