Prefer the least handling that meets the plan

If both prints are already framed appropriately, exchanging their wall positions may be simpler than removing the artwork from each frame. Check the new locations and hanging requirements for each complete object. A shared outside size does not mean identical weight or hardware.

If the artwork must be changed inside a frame, establish whether the assembly is designed for that use. Valuable, fragile, or conservation-mounted works should be handled by the appropriate professional. Do not treat a carefully mounted print as if it were a loose snapshot in a tabletop frame.

Work with one assembly at a time

Clear a clean surface and prepare a separate labeled container for the parts associated with that frame. Photograph the rear arrangement before any permitted disassembly. Keep spacers, clips, and brackets from different frames apart, even when they look similar.

Do not place metal parts on glazing or artwork. Keep tools away from the image and support the whole frame while working. If something resists removal or appears attached to the artwork, stop rather than forcing it. The obstruction may be part of the mounting system.

Check the replacement's requirements

A new print may differ in thickness, surface, dimensions, or paper behavior. The old mat opening may conceal a signature or expose an unintended border. Confirm the fit and appropriate support instead of assuming that matching nominal sizes make the contents interchangeable.

Glazing care and separation still matter. Keep the product details with the frame, and have the assembly revised if the new artwork requires a different construction. Reusing a frame is useful only when the frame is suitable for what it will now hold.

Store the removed work immediately

Prepare a suitable enclosure before the rotation begins so the outgoing print is not left on a table while you finish. Label its housing with the same identifier used in your records. Keep any mat or support that belongs with it clearly associated without placing unsuitable loose materials against the image.

Before rehanging, inspect the frame, confirm the finished weight, and check the wall attachment. Update the record with the new contents and date. That small final step prevents a future cleaner or framer from relying on material details that belonged to the previous print.
