Ask about the surface beneath the image
A white base and a clear coating over visible metal can produce quite different results. ChromaLuxe, one manufacturer of coated panels for dye sublimation, distinguishes white and clear surfaces in several sheen levels. Clear versions allow the metal's appearance to contribute to lighter portions of the image. A white version provides a different starting point for those same highlights.
This matters especially for a portrait, a snowy landscape, or a pale illustration. Ask for a sample of the finish and, if color is important, a proof of your own file. A photograph of a metal print on a screen cannot reproduce the way the surface changes when you move around it.
Check reflections before selecting gloss
Stand where the panel will be viewed and identify the windows and lamps behind you. Their reflections can compete with the image, particularly in dark passages. A lower sheen may help, but compare the actual options rather than assuming a label such as matte means a completely reflection-free surface.
Consider the panel's visible edges too. Rounded corners and square corners have different visual effects, while a backing mount can create a shadow between the print and the wall. Ask for side and rear photographs when an online listing shows only the front.
Understand the installation and care
Confirm the total weight, the supplied mounting system, its required wall fasteners, and the panel's distance from the wall. A wide panel can be awkward even if it weighs less than a similarly sized glass frame. Have a second person assist with a large piece and use fasteners suited to the wall construction and the complete load.
Indoor and outdoor products are not interchangeable. Obtain the instructions for the specific print and coating, including permitted cleaning methods and placement restrictions. General claims that metal prints resist moisture do not describe every product sold under that name. Keep the order details with the mounting instructions so you can identify the panel when it is moved or cleaned later.
